Sand Art Festival of Alleppey

Sand Art Festival of Alleppey

Carving of sculpture in sand or sand art has become very popular in recent years everywhere especially in the coastal beaches areas. It is the execution of sand into an artistic form or model. Sand brushing, sand sculpture, sand painting, or sand bottles are some of the examples of sand art. A sand castle is a type of sand sculpture resembling a miniature building, often a castle. As a child everyone longed to play in sand using shovels and buckets as main construction tools building castles and towers, buildings, passages etc. With time one realizes that sand art is not a child’s play at all. People make lots of money out of it and also get worldwide recognition.

This April, sand sculptures and paintings will adorn the picturesque Alappuzha beach. An international sand art competition, titled Sand Art Festival Alleppey (SAFA) called – The Land of Sand, is being jointly organised by the Tourism Department and the SAFA Foundation at the breathtaking and attractive Alleppey Beach in the month of April. The event will be conducted over a 9 day period i.e from 18th to 26th April' 2015. April is quite ideal for an event of this magnitude, as the school children will be home, after their exams and the possibilities of rains are quite low. The festival will feature both a competition for professional sand artists and also installation displays for general public. A total of 10 teams, including two foreign teams, will be selected for the competition among the applicants. This festival will also help in developing an iconic tourism platform alluring both domestic as well as international tourists.
