Top 5 places to visit in Kerala this winter

Kerala, popularly known as God’s own country is a tropical allure that a traveler cannot afford to miss! Nestled in this beautiful state is Alleppey or Alappuzha, a place filled with natural and stunning landscape brimming with greenery. The silver waves of Arabian Sea that welcome you to this quaint town is the lifeline of Kerala’s backwaters. This district is water-locked while its canals are well-fed and flanked by palm trees and stunning lagoons, tall coconut trees and abundant paddy fields. Home to several animal and avian species, you cannot find a more ideal tourist destination to head for.

The place turns magical in a winter which is the best time for sightseeing. The favorable climate makes its tempting to take a walk by the backwaters, or light a bonfire by the lake.

Alleppey is a must-visit, but here are a few more places in Kerela that are trip-worthy this winter.

Wayanad, the ‘Green Paradise of Kerala’, is a hill town with flourishing paddy fields. The mist laden hills, dense forests and thriving green agricultural fields make for its serene landscape. It is home to many indigenous animal species and a plethora of flora. Not only that, Wayanad is quite popular for housing the largest tribal population of the state.

All of this makes it a perfect tourist destination all through the year, but winters are simply magical.

Kovalam famed for its diverse golden beaches offers the pleasure of travelling with steep headlands and the three curve-shaped beaches, separated by the stony outcroppings that highlight this coastal resort. The clear water with shallow bottoms is all that an amateur swimmer can ask for! Kovalam’s picturesque surroundings have made it to be the first place in Kerala to feature on the International Tourism Map in a big way. The sandy beaches of Kovalam are also popular for the array of shacks and shops that offer all kinds of services from the curio shops, money changers, hawkers of Tibet to something as distant as Kashmiri products too.

The most remarkable among the hill stations of Kerala is Munnar that boasts of lush green Western Ghats, wildlife, extensive tea gardens, rivers with crystal clear waters, several other tourist attractions. It is heavily thronged by tourist making it one of the most loved hill stations of the state. Away from the hustle-bustle of the city life, its breathtaking beauty is a haven of tranquility and serenity, makes it a popular hot-spot amidst adventure-seekers where they can opt from innumerable things to indulge in some adventure.

Kumarakom, a small village set on the bank of Vembanad Lake is just 13 kms. away from the city of Kottayama. Dotted with numerous palaces, forts and mansions which once had been the establishment of Kerala’s royal lineage, this place is surely the most majestic destination of the state in every sense of the word. The scenic hamlet too is very popular offers the tourists with a variety of exotic sightseeing, fishing and boating experience. Set against the backdrops of the Vembanad Lake and it is surrounded in a plentitude of flora that will certainly leave the visitors spellbound.

Thekkady’s placid lakes coupled with greenery make this hill station a treasure of enchantments and will make you cherish your vacation forever. Located in the Idukki district, Thekkady is undoubtedly one of the most sought-after tourist destinations of Kerala which receives a huge footfall of tourists every year, from India as well as abroad.
