Best Places for Water Sports in Kerala

Kerala, a state in South India located on the Malabar Coast, is known to be one of the most beautiful natural attractions of the world. Travellers from all over the world are drawn towards this place for its many distinctive features some of which include Kerala’s backwaters, beaches, ayurvedic treatments and the serene greenery all around the state. The backwaters and beaches grabbing major tourist attention draw a large number of crowds to this region from all over the world.

Surrounded by some of the best beaches in the world, one of the key attractions of Kerala is water-sports. The water not only acts as a stress buster for people, but also helps in reliving our day to the fullest. From Canoeing, Kayaking to Para Sailing and Scuba Diving, Kerala is wish fulfilled for all water sport lovers. These water sports are not only risky and adventurous but they also help in rejuvenating one’s own self.

Places for Water Sports

Canoeing and Kayaking

A sport which involves paddling a canoe (lightweight narrow boat, pointed at both ends and open on top) with a single-bladed paddle, is one of the water sports which tourists enjoy. Situated in one of the major tourist spot in Alappuzha town, Alappuzha Beach is known to be the best outdoor location in Kerala for canoeing and kayaking. Famous for its boat races and backwaters, Alappuzha beach seems to be the core for the above water sports.

Canoeing and kayaking may seem to be same kind of sports but kayaking is distinguished from canoeing by the sitting position of the paddler and the number of blades on the paddle.

Para Sailing

Parasailing is a recreational activity where a person is tug behind a vehicle (usually a boat) which is attached to a specially designed canopy wing known as parachute. Parasailing is that kind of water sport which is commonly seen at places near to sea and beaches.

In Kerala, places like Kovalam beach, Alappuzha beach and Varkala beach happen to be the most suitable locations for this water sport.

Scuba Diving

Unlike other forms of diving, scuba diving is completely different. For all those who are desirous for aqua life, scuba diving is one of the pleasant options available to them in God’s own country, Kerala. Here the divers carry their own oxygen tank for breathing underwater.

The Varkala beach in Kerala offers an enormous opportunity to tourists for this water sport. From exploring the aquatic life underneath water to having a fun-filled lifetime experience, this place takes care of it all. Known for its 2000-year- old Vishnu Temple, the Varkala is also famous for scuba diving among travellers.

Snorkelling, yet another water sport activity, specially seen at tropical resort locations, is a type of swimming where the swimmer swims on or through a body of water wearing a diving mask, a shaped tube called a snorkel, and fins in legs.

Snorkelling differs from scuba diving as in scuba diving, the diver wears tight fitting diving suit and carries oxygen tank for breathing while he goes deep inside the water whereas in snorkelling, the swimmer puts on a mask and a tube and is allowed to breathe while floating underwater on the surface near to water.

Rafting and white water rafting are fun filled outdoor sporting activities which use an inflatable raft to navigate all through the water surface. This sport is often executed on rough water surface as the mixed flow of water makes its journey more intriguing. This is the only water sport which is filled with major challenges and risks all throughout the journey and handling these uncertain risks need a lot of teamwork and team effort.

In Kerala, places like the River Tejaswini, Cherupuzha and Boothathankettu, Ernakulum are well known for rafting. The backwaters of Kerala make this sport more electrifying and the participants of this sport have an experience that is unforgettable and cherished for a long time in their memories.

Catamaran Sailing

Catamaran is said to be a boat (especially a light sailboat) with two parallel hulls held together by a strong framework. The sport catamarans are designed of two and can be used for launching and landing from a beach. Nowadays motorised catamarans are used to promote sailing via catamaran as a water sport.

The beaches of Alappuzha, Verkala and Kovalam are some of the best places in Kerala for this adventurous sport. Visitors enjoy catamaran sailing at a state where there is a store of lakes, backwaters, beaches altogether to make their fun filled experience unforgettable.

Wind Surfing

Surfing is a water sport that is enjoyed in the surface of water. The wave rider or surfer rides on the deep face of the moving wave which carries the surfer towards the shore.

Wind surfing, as compared to normal surfing, is a completely different kind of adventure sport where two sports, namely sailing and surfing are combined together. In normal surfing, the surfer rides on a board of dimension ranging from 2-4meters which the surfer can move according to its wish whereas in wind surfing, a rig is attached to surfing board along with the mast and sail which the individual has to turn in order to give directions board.

Kovalam beach and Varkala beach in Kerala are best locations for this outdoor sport. Kerala being a destination which experiences high waves all throughout the year, is the best vacation spot to enjoy wind surfing.

So next time you plan a vacation to Kerala, do indulge yourself in the aforesaid water sports and make your trip worthwhile.
